TEXT 1
sri-bhagavan uvaca
abhayam sattva-samsuddhir jnana-yoga-vyavasthitih
danam damas ca svadhyayas tapa arjava
TRANSLATION
Lord Krishna said:
Fearlessness, purity of mind, stability in knowledge and yoga, charity,
self-control, religious sacrifice, continuous and regular study of the
Vedas, austerity, simplicity.
TEXT 2
ahimsa satyam akrodhas tyagah shantir apaisunam
daya bhutesv aloluptvam mardavam
hrir acapalam
TRANSLATION
Nonviolence, truthfulness, free from anger, renunciation, purity,
aversion to faultfinding, compassion for all living entities, freedom
from covetousness, gentleness, modesty, firmness.
TEXT 3
tejah ksama dhrtih shaucam adroho nati-manita
bhavanti sampadam daivim abhijatasya bharata
TRANSLATION
Effulgence, forgiveness, fortitude, sanctity, and freedom from rancor
and vanity these, O Son of Bharata! Are the qualities of him who is
endowed with divine nature.
TEXT 4
dambho darpo ’bhimanas ca krodhah parusyam eva ca
ajnanam cabhijatasya partha sampadam asurim
TRANSLATION
O Partha! Hypocrisy, arrogance, pride, anger, severity and ignorance
are the qualities of those who are of demoniac nature.
TEXT 5
daivi sampad vimokshaya nibandhayasuri mata
ma sucah sampadam daivim abhijato ’si pandava
TRANSLATION
Divine natures are contributive to liberation from sins and the
demoniac nature creates bondage to sins. O Partha! You have born with
divine nature. So, you don’t worry.
TEXT 6
dvau bhuta-sargau loke ’smin daiva asura eva ca
daivo vistarasah prokta asuram partha me shrinu
TRANSLATION
O Partha! In this world, there is two types of beings in this world –
Divine and Demon. Divine nature has been described in detail. Now
listen from Me about the Demonic.
TEXT 7
pravrttim ca nivrttim ca jana na vidur asurah
na shaucam napi cacaro na satyam tesu vidyate
TRANSLATION
The demonic neither know what to do nor what not to do. They neither
have any establish rule of conduct, virtue, intention of performance
of duty and deference nor want to step back from immorality. Neither
purity nor establish rule of conduct nor truth is found in them.
TEXT 8
asatyam apratishtham te jagad ahur anishvaram
aparaspara-sambhutam kim anyat kama-haitukam
TRANSLATION
They say that this world is unreal,
baseless, and without God. They say “This world is produced by the
mutual cohabitation due only to lust. What can be the other reason?”
TEXT 9
etam drstim avastabhya nastatmano ’lpa-buddhayah
prabhavanty ugra-karmanah ksayaya jagato ’hitah
TRANSLATION
Sticking to such assumptions, these depraved souls with
shallow-mindedness, the doers of horrible acts, who don’t believe in
their self and are the enemies of the world, get ready for the
destruction of the world.
TEXT 10
kamam asritya duspuram dambha-mana-madanvitah
mohad grhitvasad-grahan pravartante ’suci-vratah
TRANSLATION
Harbored behind insatiable lust, full of hypocrisy, pride, arrogance
and illusion by believing false dogmas, they strive for
transitory things by engaging in impure actions.
TEXT 11
cintam aparimeyam ca pralayantam upasritah
kamopabhoga-parama etavad iti niscitah
TRANSLATION
Taking the shelter of the excessive anxiety, that ends only with their
death, engrossed in the satisfaction of desires, and regarding
gratification of their desires as their sole objective in life, they
believe in this.
TEXT 12
asa-pasa-satair baddhah kama-krodha-parayanah
ihante kama-bhogartham anyayenartha-sancayan
TRANSLATION
Bound in hundred loops of hopes, wholly occupied by lust and anger,
they use illegal means to accumulate wealth for the satisfaction of
their desires.
TEXT 13
idam adya maya labdham imam prapsye manoratham
idam astidam api me bhavisyati punar dhanam
TRANSLATION
Day and night, they are always inclined that “Today I have acquired
this. Now, tomorrow I will fulfill my that wish also. I already have
this wealth and and that wealth will also be mine.
TEXT 14
asau maya hatah satrur hanisye caparan api
isvaro ’ham aham bhogi siddho ’ham balavan sukhi
TRANSLATION
I have killed that enemy. I will kill my
other enemies also. I am God. I am enjoyer of all happiness. I am
perfect. I am strong. I am happy
TEXT 15
adhyo ’bhijanavan asmi ko ’nyo ’sti sadrso maya
yaksye dasyami modisya ity ajnana-vimohitah
TRANSLATION
I am complete with wealth and people. I am of noble descent. Who else
is same like me. I will perform sacrifice. I will give charity. I
shall rejoice” In this way, they are deluded with ignorance.
TEXT 16
aneka-citta-vibhranta moha-jala-samavrtah
prasaktah kama-bhogesu patanti narake ’sucau
TRANSLATION
Perplexed by various anxieties, bound by the net of delusion and
engrossed in the enjoyment of desires, they fall into a impure and
deep hell.
TEXT 17
atma-sambhavitah stabdha dhana-mana-madanvitah
yajante nama-yajnais te dambhenavidhi-purvakam
TRANSLATION
Self-conceited, obstinate and filled with false prestige and
intoxication of wealth, they perform sacrifices in anomalous ways.
TEXT 18
ahankaram balam darpam kamam krodham ca samsritah
mam atma-para-dehesu pradvisanto ’bhyasuyakah
TRANSLATION
Bewildered by egoism, strength, arrogance, lust and anger, these
critic demons become envious of Me, the One Who live in their bodies
and in the bodies of others.
TEXT 19
tan aham dvisatah kruran samsaresu naradhaman
ksipamy ajasram asubhan asurisv eva yonisu
TRANSLATION
Those envious, cruel, evil and sordid persons, I again and again cast
them into the generation of demoniac in this world.
TEXT 20
asurim yonim apanna mudha janmani janmani
mam aprapyaiva kaunteya tato yanty adhamam gatim
TRANSLATION
O Son of Kunti! Attaining repeated births amongst the generation of
demoniac life, these fools by not attaining Me, then, attain the
lowest state repeatedly.
TEXT 21
tri-vidham narakasyedam dvaram nasanam atmanah
kamah krodhas tatha lobhas tasmad etat trayam tyajet
TRANSLATION
There are three doors of this hell leading to subvert of the soul —
lust, anger and greed. Therefore, the wise should evade these three
doors.
TEXT 22
etair vimuktah kaunteya tamo-dvarais tribhir narah
acaraty atmanah sreyas tato yati param gatim
TRANSLATION
O Kautanya! The man emancipated from these doors of darkness conducts
acts good for his self (salvation) and attains the Supreme
destination.
TEXT 23
yah shastra-vidhim utsrjya vartate kama-karatah
na sa siddhim avapnoti na sukham na param gatim
TRANSLATION
He who discards the ordinances of the scriptures, conduct acts of his
own accord neither attains the perfection nor he attains any happiness
nor the Supreme destination.
TEXT 24
tasmac chastram pramanam te karyakarya-vyavasthitau
jnatva shastra-vidhanoktam karma kartum iharhasi
TRANSLATION
Therefore, the scriptures are the testaments to decide of what should
be done and what should not be done. After knowing the ordinances
given in the scriptures, you should act as accordingly.
